backpacking on the silk road

I want to organize a one-week backpacking trip on the silk road with my friend. We want to go to Uruqmi, Kashgar, Turpan and Dunhuang. Is it possible to connect all these cities by train? Do we have to book hostels before hand in every city or is it easy to find last minute housing?

There is no direct train from Dunhuang to Urumqi. You may take bus from Dunhuang to Liuyuan and take train from there to visit Urumqi first. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours from Dunhuang to Liuyuan by taxi. Then you can take train fom Urumqi to visit Uprpan and Kashgar. I have no idea when you take this trip. July, August and September are the best time to visit Xinjiang. The accommodation shouldn't be a problem. However, you may find it difficult to buy train tickets. If possible, please book all your trains in advance.
