Ian, the route is ok. But I am not sure if the immigrant officers let you pass. UK citizens are not required to apply visa for HK and Macau. The officer may think you intentionally make use the policy to avoid apply a visa for visiting mainland China. I think you should call the beijing airport immigration inspection at 0086-10-56095400 to confirm this.
