Can I apply for tourist visa by myself without the need of a travel agency?

I am French travelling in Japan and want to apply for China tourist type. A Chinese friend is inviting me to his home.
Are applications online possible?

Online application is impossible because the embassy and consulates don't accept it anymore. And you should apply via appointed travel agencies in Japan instead of applying on your own.
