Things I need to know about Chengdu

Hi! Was wondering if anyone can help me. I am visiting that city this September (2014). I am a female in my 20's and my friend who I am going with is also in her 20's.

I have a few questions.

Can many people speak English as I know VERY little Mandarin, not enough to get by.

Are taxis safe to use to travel around and do they cost much ( Do the drivers speak any English )

We are both Vegetarian, is it easy for us to find a meal without meat and how much roughly does a meal/drinks cost?

Do staff in hotels speak English?

and finally, i'm from the UK, so how much money is allowed in to the country?

I really appreciate your answers, I have read up about a few things, but everyone has different answers, so not too sure. Thanks!

Most local people cannot speak English and only some young people can speak. So if you go there, you need to prepare some important places' cards such as the hotels' name in mandarin. These cards may help you a lot during your trip.

The taxis are very safe to take and it is always charged based on meters. The taxi drivers cannot speak English.

Chinese vegetarian food can be found, but not so easy. The prices are different according to what kind of food do you want to taste. If you want to know more, you may tell me which area do you want to live. So that I can help you to find some nearby vegetarian restaurants.

Some star-hotels' staff can speak some English, but some cannot. But no matter whether they can speak or not, they are very helpful and friendly.

For the cash, no more than 20,000RMB is allowed to taken in. For others, you may need to put it in your card to take in.

Hi!

Thank you for getting in touch and giving me some answers. We are staying at the main holiday inn in Chengdu. The one right in the middle of the city.

I forgot to say in my previous question, is it safe to use a debit card in China or do I need to get travellers cheques?
