Japan resident from UK require a tourist visa to China

Hello,

I have a UK passport and I am currently living in Tokyo (I have a residents card. I plan to travel to mainland China for a short vacation next month. Can you confirm if I can apply for a tourist visa directly from the Chinese embassy or does this have to be from a travel agency? Many thanks for your help.
