My family is going to China & my parents are convinced that I can't wear shorts.

I have shorts that come to the middle of my thigh, and my parents have told me that I can't wear shorts or tank tops. They think I have go cover my knees & shoulders at all times. But It's way too hot to wear anything besides tank tops and shorts. Is it okay to wear these things in China?
