i plan on driving when I am in BJ. Where can i get a temporary driving permit in that city? I have a US driving license. Do I need to take a test to get the China driving permit? Also what documents are needed and how much? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can exchange a Chinese driving license with your American one. You have to apply for it in the local department (Vehicle Administration Office) with your passport, China visa and residence permit. And you must take a test on traffic regulations, driving knowledge and emergency response. The whole procedure will cost about CNY 120. Here you should make sure to prepare a Chinese translation of your American Driiving License. As I know, Driver Licenses are now available from Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport.
