UK Citizen applying for a Chinese Tourist Visa

I am travelling through Thailand on my way back to Shanghai, during which time my Z will expire. Therefore can I apply for a Chinese 30-day tourist L on my way back with no issue?
I will have an invitation letter and all of the relevant documents.
Also, can you definitely use the express service if you turn up and pay the extra fee or is there some way I can confirm this before I arrive at the office?

Many thanks

I am afraid not. Because it is impossible to change tourist L to student X within China as I know. If you have invitation letter for study, I think you should apply directly for a student X type in Thailand. Then air ticket is not required.
Express service is availbale, but sorry I am not sure about the same day service.

Thanks for your reply Cary! I spoke to the admissions office and I was told that its okay to convert a tourist L to a student X. Therefor I just wanted to ensure I could apply for a tourist L with a regular invitation letter from a resident in shanghai

If you are received by an individual, then you should submit an invitation letter in Chinese addressed to the embassy for application.
