i plan to travel by bullet train from beijing to shanghai september '14.

Question

Can I purchase this from Australia?  My travel agent says I have to book this myself.  Is Beijing West Railway Station near the City where I'll be staying?  How far from hotel to railway station?  I will have luggage and prefer a sightseeing seat.  How do I best book this, on line or when I'm actually in Beijing?  How much is the ticket?

yes, you can purchase the ticket from Australia. you can book with online ticket agents like this website. the Beijing West Railway station is about 15km from your hotel, and it takes about 50 minutes by taxi. you can book either online or when you are in Beijing. the sightseeing seat costs CNY1,748 per person.
