About:Chinese Embassy in South Korea

Do I need to visit the embassy in advance for a 72hr visa free transit?

I have a US passport and will be travelling from Seoul to Beijing (staying less than 72hrs) then to Hong Kong.

You needn't go to the embassy. When you land at the airport, you can follow the signs to process it. It's not complicated.
