About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flight from Beijing to Vietnam via Shanghai

I am planning to enter Beijing from Mongolia and stay on a 72 hour visa. I have booked a flight to Vietnam from Beijing with plenty of time to allow for 72 hours but the flight goes via Shanghai. My luggage should be going straight to Vietnam and I shouldn't have to go through customs in Shanghai. Does anyone know if this is allowed?

No, this is not allowed. This itinerary does not apply to the free transit in Beijing. A direct transit with stopover in Beijing only is allowed if you want to stay freely for 3 days.

Will I need a tourist (L) or will the transit (G) be enough?

A transit G visa is enough for this visit.
