About:Chinese Embassy in Malaysia

I'm travelling alone to Tibet to visit a Malaysian friend who works in Tibet. Can I apply for Tibet visa?

I am afraid not. You can get a tourist L first then apply for Tibet Entry Permit through a local travel agency. BTW, you need to join a tour and visit Tibet in group.
