About:

Would like to take the train from shanghai to Xi'an.

But do not cwant to change train to many times. Tried on the internet, but it said change train at least 4 times. Can it be done with fewer changes? If so, how do ai proceed?

No, it is not true. There are direct trains between the two cities. The train have many stops on the way, but you don't need to get off at all. As for the timetable of the trains, just search that on the train page of this website.
