About:Apply for China Visa in a Third Country

I'm currently living and working in China on a Z which expires July 31.

I've been accepted to study Chinese at a university in Beijing in the fall but was told that the earliest I could get my student X is the end of August. So, basically, I have no visa to stay in China for the month of August. I'm trying to figure out how to bridge that gap so i can stay here and travel.

The current plan is to apply for a tourist L to help bridge the gap. I had two questions I was hoping somewhat might be able to answer. The first, is whether it's possible to apply for a tourist L or whether I need to leave the country. Second, relatedly, I was told by a friend that if I already have work Z in my passport, the offices in Hong Kong or elsewhere might reject my application because they think I'm coming to China to work (illegally) on a tourist L. Any thoughts? Any help is MUCH appreciated.

Hi, you can apply for a tourist L without leaving at local PSB, providing your travel itinerary such as hotel reservations or invitation letter from a friend for extra stay of one month. As I know, you should also prepare a bank statement with at least RMB 21000 in the account to support your application. Your friend is right, so better visit local PSB for tourist L application instead of applying for it in HK.

This is super helpful, thanks. Any idea what the timeline is on something like that? For instance, could I apply in advance (like now) for a tourist L that would activate on July 31? Or can I only apply right before my work Z expires? It would be helpful if I can do it in advance but somehow I sense that might not be the case?

Two other questions. Does anyone know how long it takes to process a tourist L application at the local PSB? And, also, do people get rejected? I'm sure some people get rejected sometimes, but I mean is there a tendency to reject like, say, is done to applicants in HK with a work Z already in the books because of fears they're working illegally in China (like described above)?

You can just apply one or two weeks before it expires. It is too early to apply now. The processing itself takes about 7 working days, and it is easy for you to get one if you have all documents well-prepared,such as travel itinerary, and financial support.

Thanks. I went to the Entry/Exit Bureau today and was told that I could not change my current work Z to a tourist L and that I would have to leave the country. When you say PSB, do you mean the Entry/Exit Bureau or did you mean PSB? I'm wondering if I should go to PSB tomorrow and check with them. Or maybe have the rules changed?

Just trying to find anyway to stay in China and not have to leave. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. PSB, it means Entry/Exit Administration of PSB. So it is the same. Maybe you can have a try to apply through a travel agency or visa agency instead.
