Well, Zhang Qin during the Western Han Dynasty created that. At the very beginning, it was used as a trade route, on which many things were exchanged among people (especially businessmen) from many counstries. As time passes by, the advanced transportation took the place of it and it doesn't play a role for trade any more. Nowdays, it has been a famous travel routes used by travelers of course.
