visit kubuqi desertxilamuren grassland in inner mongolia

Question

Now I am in Qinhuangdao and have decided to visit Kubuqi Desert and Xilamuren Grassland in Inner Mongolia. I just read in this website and can't decide which way will be better for me!I am not sure how to go Kubuqi Desert from Hohhot?Is it a good choice if I go from Beijing to Hohhot and Hohhot-> Xilamuren Grassland-> Hohhot-> Kubuqi Desert-> Hohhot->Beijing? Would you please help me to make a plan to visit that two place I mentioned and the easy way to go. I like to use public transport. So if possible please tell me which way will be better. Thank you.

Yes, you made a good plan. Between Beijing and Hohhot, you can use airplane or train, both of which are recommended to book in advance. To Xilamuren Grassland, you can take a bus at Hohhot Bus Station to Zhaohe, where the grassland is located in around 2h. For the cak trip, you can use the same way!To the desert, also at then same bus station in Hohhot, take a bus to Dalad Banner (Dala Teqi, for short, Daqi) and then rent a car or take a taxi to reach.

Thank you Lucy for your kind reply. Do you know how far the desert from Daqi? After visit Kubuqi which one is the easy way to come back Beijing? Go to Baotong for train or come back to Hohhot again and than take train?Is it harass-free to buy a 'Local' tour package? Because I'll go alone and my Chinese is also not very good. Waiting for your reply...If you've personal experience would you please share....Thank you again.

There is around 100km from the Daqi to desert. It is suggested to go back to Baotou to take a train for back to Beijing, because the buses from Kubuqi are more than the buses for Hohhot. Joining a local tour package will save you a lot time for you during traveling. Sometimes, the local buses are not easy to take even for Chinese people. So if condition is possible, you are suggested to join a tour.
