I am a student that is going to be studying at XM University for a month over the summer! we have our weekends free and wasnt sure if there were any places close that would be worth a weekend visit? Thanks!

Of course there are. Firstly, the famous South Putuo Temple is very close to your school, so you can easily walk there for a visit. Except that, you are also recommended to visit the Gulangyu Island, which can be easily reached by taking a ferry at Lundu.
