x2 visa in hangzhou

hi there..i'm studying in hangzhou now and i want to re-enter and study for second semester without residence permit because i haven't applied it before..can i come and stay with my x2 instead of applying the residence permit or should i apply for x2 and come to hangzhou and apply for residence permit??thanks
