Why was the Silk Road used as a trading route?

It was first explored as the route to connect the different countries. People travelling on the road sometimes needed life necessity, but they couldn't take along everything. Therefore, they would exchange something necessary with the items they took along. As time passes by, the trade gradually developed and prosper. Then people traded more goods on the road.
