About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying from HK to Shanghai then the next day flying to Singapore with a UK passport

Do I need to apply for a visa for China? My trip originates from the UK and I will be returning to the UK from Singapore?

Hi, it should be ok, because HK is considered as the third region for free transit. You are advised to confirm this with Shnaghai airport directly via 0086-21-51105100.
