US to HK, HK to Shanghai, and then Shanghai to US

I hold a US passport. I am traveling from US to Hong Kong for 5 days and then from Hong Kong to Shanghai for 2 days, and then from Shanghai back to the US. Will I be okay with the 72 hr free transit in Shanghai? I don't know if it matters, but I am flying on different airlines for all flights.

Yes, you can avail this free transit in Shanghai. You can also try to comfirm this with your airline directly.
