Can I apply for Temporary Residence Permit with S2 visa?

I was accidentally given the wrong (S2) for my trip to China. I will enroll in university and they will give me JW202 form, acceptance letter, and I will take health examination.

The school told me to apply for Tourist (L) and apply for temporary residence permit in China but they gave me S2 instead. Will I be allowed to get a temporary residence permit with all of the appropriate materials?

Thanks

Hi, you need not to apply for temporary residence permit if you are there on an S2. But if you wnat to study in a university, the correct type should be X type, X1 for longer stay of more than 180 days, or X2 for a stay less than 180 days. It is not advisable to apply for L type.

Hi Brad,

My school told me I can apply for L so I did. My school wants me to apply for temporary residence permit as i will be there for 1 year. The embassy already gave me S2 instead.

My biggest question is that are there any restrictions for applying temporary residence permit with an S2? I am allowed to apply? I will have JW202 form, acceptance letter, and required health examination certificate at the time.

The fact is that it is unnecessary to apply for temporary residence permit if you have S2. Also, the PSB will not issue it to S2 holders. You can stay in China with S2 for time period allowed as "duration of each entry". When you get JW202 form, you have to leave and apply for student X.

Thanks for the help Brad. I guess I can make a trip to Hong Kong and apply for new X1 type with all of the appropriate materials there. Does this sound like a good idea?

I am not sure if you can apply for your X1 type in HK. According to the latest rules, all applicants who apply in HK must provide their HK resident status.

Brad,

I actually have good news.

I've contacted some other universities in China and they said should you be accepted into a school, S2 is possible to convert to residence permit.

"The answer is positive for an S2 to be converted into X2 or residence permit."

"If you get admitted to our school, you can change your S2 to temporary residence permit."

Jordan did you get a residence permit and did it go through? I am bringing my son and father to China and the agency gave me an S2 visa by mistake instead of giving me an S1.
