Travel limitations on 72 hours visa free transit

If I am flying from bkk to Beijing, then 32hrs later continuing on to New York from the same airport, can I get the 72h hour free transit to visit the Great Wall? I know it is a few hours outside the city, but does that mean it is another city altogether and invalidates my ability to receive the visA?
