About:China Private Visit Visa

I am an American, my husband is living and working in China.

All paperwork is in order for my Application for residency (long stay). I was issued an S2 visa in America and am now in China and told I need an S1. Is it possible to get the residency (long stay) with an S2.

No, S2 is for a stay less than 6 months, the S2 holders do not need to apply residence permit. But you are able to extend your S2 before it expires.
