Travel around china by train

We are flying into Hong Kong airport on Sept 29 and want to go straight to Beijing to see Great Wall then Xian for Terracotta Army ant a panda place in Chengdu then finally back to Hong Kong to fly on! Is this all possible by train and would this be the bullet train routes? Thanks. Also we are on a pretty tight budget so would train be a fairly cheap mode of transport?

Yes, all the journey can be finished by trains.
From HK to Beijing, you are suggested to take Guangzhou-Kowloon Train to reach GZ and then take a high speed train for Beijing. The train takes about 10 hours. The second class seat costs about 862RMB per person.

Then from Beijing to Xian, it is suggested to overnight trains to reach Xian in morning. The overnight trians are not bullet trains and for detail train schedule, you are suggested to look on the Train Section on this website.

From Xian to Chengdu, also the overnight trains are suggested.

For booking train tickets, it is suggested to choose the soft sleeper. If you think the soft sleeper is expensive, you can choose the hard sleeper and no hard seat is taken into consideration.
