About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I still qualify for the 72-hour visa-free transit, or does my connecting flight disqualify me?

Hello,

I am traveling from US -> Japan -> China (Shanghai, PVG) -> US.

However, my flight from China -> US has a connecting flight through Japan (I am not going outside of the airport).

I am afraid you have to apply for a transit G for this visit if the stopover in Shanghai is longer than 24 hours.

Is this because of my connecting flight? If I did not have a connecting flight, would I qualify for the 72-hour free transit?

To be clear, my travel route is:
US to Japan (staying for 7 days)
Japan to China (staying less than 3 days)
China to US (connecting flight via Tokyo)

No, visa is required if your return trip from China to US has a connecting flight via Tokyo.
