72 hour visa-free transit?

As a US citizen, I am going to Beijing then on to DPRK the next day. I have my US passport, roundtrip ticket from Beijing and back. Is there a transit application I still need?

A transit G visa is not necessary, but you have to show ticket leaving from Beijing to DPRK within 72 hours if you want to apply for this free transit stay in Beijing.
