About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour transit visa application procedure with layover

I will be traveling from Vietnam to Shanghai for less than 72 hours and then to the United States (home country), so I would like to take advantage of the free transit. My flight from Hanoi to Shanghai stops in Beijing first (I will not leave the airport), and when I contacted my airline to apply for the G type they told me to do it at the airport. Will I apply in Shanghai or Beijing? Where in the airport? Will they let me through in Beijing? I know I meet the requirements but hoping to do this right!

According to my knowledge, you won't be able to enjoy 72 hours free transit if you stop in Beijing and Shanghai. But I think you can apply for a stay permit (rather than a G type) if you stay less then 24 hours in these two cities.

To clarify, I will not stay at all in Beijing, I just have a connecting flight there on my way to Shaghai (just a few hours) and will not leave the airport. Let me know if you still think I'll have problems. Thanks!

Yes, Alice is right, you can not avail 72 hour visa free transit in Shanghai if your flight will stop in Beijing.
