Hi, you can apply for student X directly. It will be valid for 3 months from issue date, so you can use it to enter in July and travel around China. After you register with the school, you can start the processing of residence permit asap. You can travel without any problem in this case. As I know, the residence permit cost about RMB 400 for one year. Sorry, I have no idea how much will the medical exam cost.

Hi, you need to submit your application for residence permit within 30 days after entry. So just enter in mid or late July and apply for it in the beginning of August after registration with the school.
