The Silk Road passes many countries so that it's difficult to list how many cities it passes. But I can list the cities within China. It passes Chang'an, Guyuan/Longxi, Lanzhou, Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuquan, Dunhuang, Yumen Pass, Yangguan Pass and Loulan in Xinjiang. The route splits into two from Loulan. The northern route passes Korla, Qiuzi (its modern name Kuqa), Shule (Kashgar, its modern name). The Southern route passes by Shanshan (Ruoqiang), Qiemo, Jingjue, Yutian (Hetian), Pishan, Shache and Shule (Kashgar).
