About:Bao'en Temple Pagoda

Can I apply for visa Z and my family apply for S1 type at the same time?

I am in the process of applying for the Z type. Now, the school tells me that it is fine for my family to also apply for S1 at the same time. Is this possible? Will I then need to write my wife and child an invitation letter even if i am not in China yet?

Sorry, it's impossible. Your family needs your copy of passport and temporary resident permit to apply for S1. However, you only get the temporary resident permit after you apply for it in 30 days when you arrive.

I have an update on this issue: One of the new teachers (head of secondary) is a UK citizen and his last post was India. He arrived on January 6th 2014 with his wife and daughter aged 14. Maybe it depends on the individual embassy where you and your family are applying for the visa. I just thought of clarifying this.
