New Zealand to Haikou through Guangzhou, Travelling back to New Zealand

Can I stop in Guangzhou for 72 hours with the free permit? Will I need a visa for Haikou?

No, you have to apply for a Chinese visa in advance for this visit. A single entry is enough to Haikou, as well as the stopover in Guangzhou.
