X2 or L visa?

I would like to go to Beijing to study Chinese for 7 months, June-Dec 2014 (not through a University, but a language school).
-What are the chances of getting that much time granted on an X2?
-Do I have better chance of getting an X2 if I apply for a shorter time (for example only 5 months)
-If an X2 is denied, can I then apply for an L?
-Would I get charged the $149 twice due to applying for 2 different types?

Thanks!

Hi, X2 is for a stay no more than 6 months, so you can get X2 for 6 month then extend it for one more month without leaving. You do not need pay if application is denied, so only pay one time.
