About:Embassy & Consulates of U.K. in China

I am visiting China for 3 months backpacking, possibly volunteering and travelling, which visa?

Which type would I need, and I have read that I will be needing a letter of invitation as I am staying for longer than a 60 day period, as of the rule change last June/ July. Please can I have some up to date advice on which type I will be required to get, and if a letter is necessary.

Hi, it is true that generally tourist L is issued with 30 days as the duration of stay. And round-way ticket and hotel reservation are required. Otherwise, you have to provide invitation letter from a travel agency with details travel itinerary. The L can be extended while in China so I don't think it is a problem. Or you can just apply for a double entry or multiple entry one for a longer stay.
