About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72-hour transit visa-free question

Hi, I am a US citizen going on a cruise in SE Asia - flying from the US, embarking in Singapore, but disembarking the ship in Shanghai. I plan on going straight from the cruise ship port to the airport and flying out the same day from Shanghai back to the US. Would the 72-hour transit exemption apply, or do I need to apply for an at-cost tourist or transit visa? Thanks in advance.

The 72 hour free transit permit only applies to transit by air. You need to apply for a transit visa in advance through Chinese embassy/consulate.

I wonder whether Grace can apply for a stay permit at Shanghai because she plans to fly out of Shanghai once she disembarks?

Benson is right, 72 hour free transit only applies to transit passengers by air via Shanghai. Anyway, you can try to confirm this with Shnaghai airport if necessary. Tel: 0086-21-51105100

I think Grace is going to stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hours. Visa free "Transit for less than 24 hours" is applicable to Air and Sea.
