To get Tourist Invitation Letter

did you provide the "Documents showing the itinerary including round trip air ticket booking record and proof of hotel reservation, etc."?
i've learnt from the visa requirements that you need to provide an invitation letter if you don't have the obove documents.

usually, travel agency does not provide invitation letter unless you book a tour with the agency. it is ok if you have a friend in China who can write you an invitation letter.
