About:Shanghai Transportation by Air

I plan to go from Auckland to Shanghai then to Xian.

Would l need to go through customs in SH city (where I would need to claim my baggage) or can I go through customs in Xian when I arrive there?

If you hold the connecting boarding pass, you don't need to claim your baggage at SH and just pick it up in Xian. If you don't, you need to pick it up at SH and recheck it in. However, whichever case you will be, you have to pass the immigration/customs in SH.
