About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

I have a New Zealand Passport valid till July 2014 and I have a visa allowing entry till 2014-04-23

Do I need to renew my New Zealand Passport because I read that I need at least 6 months before expiry in order to enter China

No, it is not true. Your passport is ok for entry, and you can apply passport renewal while you are in China.
