About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need to get a visa if staying longer than 72 hours in Shenyang, China

I live in the United States and am planning on visiting a friend in Shenyang, China. I would like to stay longer than 72 hours. if I do, how do I go about trying to get it?

You should apply for a Chinese tourist L in advance from Chinese embassy/consulate. An invitation letter from your friend is required as well as copies of his/her Chinese ID or foreigner's residence permit and passport. BTW, if you can provide round-trip ticket and hotel bookings, invitation letter is not necessary.
