Cruise ship passengers visiting Shanghai for 10 hours need visa?

We are visiting Shanghai for about 10 hours via Princess cruise ship in April 2014. We have US passports and that will be our port in mainland China. We have never visited China before and Princess suggests we need one that will cost us about $180.00 each .

Hi Haley, will you visit Shanghai city during the 10 hour stopover? if yes, you can apply for a stay permit after arrival at Shanghai port. It is unnecessary to apply for a visa in this situation.

Hi Haley,
After all, did you apply the China VISA as Princess recommended even you don't plan to visit Shanghai?
Or you only apply for a stay permit after arrival at Shanghai port?
