L or Q1 visa?

I am an American citizen visiting my son's Chinese mother-in-law in March. Do I qualify for a Q1, and is there any advantage in this over an L? Also, I do not live near a city with a PRC embassy. How best to obtain it?

Hi, you are eligible to apply for Q1 type, but if you are visiting for no more than 180 days, a Q2 is enough. These two types are all better than tourist L of course because you will be issued with a longer duration of stay after entry.
As I know, Chinese embassy and consulate do not accept applications by post, but you can send someone else to handle this on your behalf.
