We wanted to stay 2 nights in Beijing and do a private day tour to the Great Wall and back and then leave Beijing to go to Hong Kong on Dragonair from the same airport on the Wednesday 9th evening.

Your route sounds good. If you have onward tickets for HK and leave Beijing within 72 hours, I think you will enjoy 72 hours free transit in Beijing.

Would this qualify us for the 72 hour tourist visa? There is a family if 6.
