Separate tickets

My friend and I are hoping to fly into Shanghai on December 21st, stay in Shanghai for two nights with a friend and then depart via Air canada on the evening of December 23rd. They are two separately booked tickets. Are we required to inform the airline we're flying with or do we receive a 72 hr transit permit upon arrival? And after we receive it, do we need to register with the local police station?

You need to inform your carrier airline about the transit, then they will send your information to the airport. But, the permit is issued upon arrival showing your passport and flight ticket for leaving. Most hotels will do the registration on your behalf, but you need to register by yourself to the local police if you will stay, let's say, in your friend's home.
