Do I need to a visa to travel to Dongguan?

I'm traveling to Dongguan from Hong Kong via train. I have an American passport and a Hong Kong ID card. Thanks.

Yes, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance for this visit. If you are now in HK, you can apply through the Commissioner office of the Ministry of China Foreign Affairs there.

You can submit your application to the Commissioner's office directly, or through a travel agency. Also as I remember, there is an office inside the HK airport providing China visa service.
