About:Chinese Consulate in Auckland

I am a New Zealand citizen and passport holder. Do I need a Visa to visit China as a tourist.

I intend to stay 2 -3 weeks. If I need one, do I need to obtain it in advance or will I get one as I enter the country? thank you.

Yes, you need to apply for a L type one from the Chinese embassy in advance.
