About:China Visa Exemption

I am a united states citizen visiting Shanghai for less than 72 hours.

I have a valid US passport and all travel is already booked. I am going to Shanghai then to Taiwan. Will I qualify for the 72 hour transit visa? I will be staying in Shanghai. I want to sightsee there so I will be leaving the airport.
