Ticket type for X visa holder.

Hi
I've been issued a student visa to study in Medicine in China, I would like to know if I can travel on a non return ticket or must I buy a return ticket?
I over heard some friends saying the immigration services in china would deport students with X if they came into china with a non return ticket
Please can you help me clarify.
