About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I eligible for the visa-free transit if my onwards flight has a layover also in China?

I fly from Bangkok-Guangzhou on December 15th. I have an onwards flight from Guangzhou-Toronto on December 18th. This flight has a 3 hour layover in Beijing on December 18th, does this layover make me ineligible for the transit permit, as I will technically be leaving Guangzhou (even though I will not be leaving the airport in Beijing)?

So you stop in Beijing and Guangzhou in fact. Then you won't enjoy 72 hours free transit and you need to apply for a G type one in advance.

I am currently staying in China on an (L) which expires this week. I plan to travel, then fly from Bangkok-Guangzhou-Toronto.
Am I able to apply for a (G) inside of China?
