Will it be difficult to travel around without going on group tour? If travel alone how should one start and get around?

The best time to travel there is July to Sep. Generally, it is suggested to travel there with a guide. If you wanna travel alone, it is acceptable, as the signs are marked both in English (some in Pinyin) and Chinese. Tourists usually start their trip from the North Slope.
