Can I book the high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing, a few days before departure?

Or do you have to book well in advance?

Yes, it is generally ok to book that a few days before leaving. But if you are traveling during Chinese public holidays, like May Day and National Day holiday, it is best to book that 10-20 days ahead.
